80,000 Hours

What 80,000 Hours does

80,000 Hours is a London-based nonprofit organization that helps people find and transition into careers that tackle the world’s most pressing problems. Its core programs combine (1) research and content that ranks high-impact career directions and explains how to think about career decisions under uncertainty, (2) media products (notably a podcast and long-form videos) aimed at raising awareness of pressing global risks and career-relevant opportunities, (3) a curated job board and role-matching/search workflows, and (4) free one-on-one career advising for some users, including support for building plans and connections to high-impact roles. Strategically, the organization has been focusing on existential-scale issues connected to advanced AI and the transition to transformative AI, positioning career advice as a “talent pipeline” lever for AI safety and related risk-reduction work. In 2025 it completed a spin-out from Effective Ventures, establishing separate UK entities (a nonprofit limited company for operating programs and a registered charity that owns/handles key IP and donations).
