What Alan Turing Institute does
The Alan Turing Institute is the UK’s independent national institute for data science and artificial intelligence, headquartered at the British Library in London. It was created in 2015 to advance “great leaps” in data science and AI research for the public good, with stated goals spanning (1) advancing world-class research and applying it to national and global challenges, (2) building skills across sectors and career stages, and (3) driving an informed public conversation through public engagement and policy-relevant advice. The Institute operates as an independent charity and also has a wholly-owned subsidiary (Turing Innovations Limited) used to deliver and commercialise aspects of its research-and-partnership activities, including defence and security partnerships. Current science and innovation activities are organised across thematic mission areas and programmes, and the Institute also runs public-facing and capacity-building platforms such as an online learning platform and skills/collaboration initiatives.
