What Amii does
Amii (the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute) is an independent non-profit AI institute based in Edmonton, Alberta, focused on advancing “AI for Good and for All” through a combination of machine-intelligence research, AI talent development, and applied commercialization/adoption support. Amii positions itself as one of Canada’s three national AI institutes under the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy, working alongside Mila, the Vector Institute, and CIFAR to connect frontier research to workforce readiness and real-world industry deployment.
On the research side, Amii emphasizes machine-intelligence foundations—especially reinforcement learning—while also describing programs spanning trustworthy AI, explainability/interpretability, and applied work in domains such as health and energy.
On the human-capital and commercialization side, Amii runs national-scale education and upskilling initiatives (including AI literacy for post-secondary institutions and specialized talent programs), and also launches domain-focused “labs” to accelerate the transition from AI research to clinical or industrial applications. A current example is its “Health Innovation Lab,” introduced as a multi-year $10M initiative in partnership with the Government of Alberta, explicitly aimed at bridging research and healthcare frontline deployment.
Strategically, Amii’s recent posture (in 2025–2026) combines: (1) major Alberta and national/partner-backed investments tied to research talent and workforce readiness; (2) partnerships with major AI ecosystem actors (e.g., Anthropic credits and Google.org support); and (3) scaling applied programs and instruments for educators, instructors, and industry adopters—framing the institute as an execution layer for Canada’s AI ecosystem rather than only a research center.
