What ARPA-H does
ARPA-H (Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health) is a U.S. federal biomedical R&D funding agency within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), associated with NIH but structured as an independent entity whose Director reports directly to the HHS Secretary. ARPA-H’s mission is to accelerate better health outcomes by funding and operating high-risk, high-reward biomedical and health research programs that are not readily accomplished through traditional research pathways or commercial activity. Instead of simply issuing grants for discrete projects, ARPA-H builds multi-year programs—driven by term-limited Program Managers—that define measurable technical milestones, competitively select performer teams, and actively manage execution toward translation-ready outcomes.
Strategically, ARPA-H emphasizes (1) platform- and systems-level approaches (e.g., new AI-enabled or standardized research ecosystems), (2) patient- and care-delivery-relevant engineering challenges (e.g., scalable clinical AI and next-generation diagnostics/monitoring), and (3) reproducibility and evaluation rigor through program design and external evaluation partners. In the current program portfolio, ARPA-H’s recent launches and award selections concentrate on accelerating “gold-standard” biomedical evidence generation (IGoR), deploying clinically authorized agentic AI for cardiovascular care (ADVOCATE), enabling distributed/on-demand genetic medicine manufacturing (GIVE), and building AI-ready data resources for rare disease diagnosis (RAPID), among other initiatives.
