What Center for Humane Technology does
Center for Humane Technology (CHT) is a California-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to ensuring consequential technologies such as AI and social media “actually serve humanity.” CHT says it works by “bringing clarity” to the incentive structures that shape technology development, deployment, and diffusion, with the goal of enabling systems-level change in the tech ecosystem and broader culture.
CHT’s approach centers on persuasive-system and product-design incentives: CHT describes its work as diagnosing how design and governance choices can lead to predictable harms, then advocating and supporting interventions that shift incentives toward user well-being, rights, and safer technology. On the AI side, CHT frames its work around safety, transparency, duty of care, human well-being, rights, and power balancing in AI development and governance—articulated through resources like its “AI Roadmap.”
CHT also operates an outward-facing public communications program (including its podcast “Your Undivided Attention”) that it uses to translate technical and systemic risks into accessible public understanding, while its policy program targets decision-makers through “incentive-shifting” policy outcomes and strategic legal engagement (including litigation-related case studies that CHT presents as part of its policy work).
