Center for Law & AI Risk

What Center for Law & AI Risk does

CLAIR — the Center for Law & AI Risk— is a nonprofit research and community-building center focused on building a scholarly “Law & AI Safety” field. CLAIR’s stated mission is to help develop legal scholarship on how law can reduce catastrophic and existential risk from advanced AI, with the center emphasizing law’s role in shaping how frontier systems are developed and deployed. CLAIR operates by running workshops, roundtables, and retreats designed to move research forward and build a durable network among legal scholars and other practitioners. The organization also supports students through programming such as LunchGPT, which aims to democratize legal inquiry into AI risk beyond elite institutions.
