What Centre for Effective Altruism does
The Centre for Effective Altruism (CEA) is a field-building organization that “stewards” the effective altruism (EA) community—supporting how people learn about, discuss, and pursue high-impact action on pressing global problems. CEA’s mission is focused on building a community characterized by clear and sound thinking, action orientation, and community support, and it emphasizes evidence- and reason-driven approaches to choosing causes and methods of helping others. CEA describes itself as an Effective Ventures project, operating in collaboration with Effective Ventures Foundation (UK) and Effective Ventures Foundation USA (EV US), which provide the legal and tax-deductible frameworks through which CEA’s work is carried out. CEA’s core programming includes online community infrastructure such as the EA Forum, community-building via conferences and local groups (including EA Global and EAGx events), and educational resources such as online courses and the Effective Altruism Handbook. CEA also highlights “community health” work intended to help ensure EA spaces function well and address serious concerns through appropriate processes. Strategically, CEA positions itself as central EA movement infrastructure—reducing friction for newcomers to engage with EA ideas and enabling coordinated community development (events, groups, and online spaces) across causes like global health and development, animal welfare, biosecurity, and AI safety.
