What Centre for Future Generations does
Centre for Future Generations (CFG) is a Brussels-based nonprofit think-and-do tank focused on helping policymakers anticipate and govern the societal impacts of rapid technological change, with an emphasis on technologies that can shape the global balance of power and that remain “largely ungoverned.” CFG organizes its work around four program areas—Advanced AI, Biotech, Climate interventions, and Neurotech—and also operates a policy-focused Incubator. Its work model is explicitly built around a foresight-and-policy workflow: it identifies emerging scenarios and issues, informs policymakers and related stakeholders about opportunities and risks, and then advocates for policy solutions and implementation.
CFG’s institutional posture is “think-and-do”: it produces research outputs (reports, technical briefings, and commentaries) and also engages through submissions to EU processes and public policy workstreams. The organization’s current strategic emphasis includes (1) advancing governance capacity for advanced AI, including compute- and enforcement-related angles; (2) considering biosecurity and biotech-related governance risks; (3) developing structured approaches to climate intervention governance through science- and dialogue-grounded multilateral decision-making; and (4) examining neurotechnology governance through a human dignity and agency lens. CFG also presents itself as working to strengthen regulators’ ability to implement and future-proof rules for emerging technologies, rather than only proposing high-level policy principles.
