What Institute for Law & AI does
The Institute for Law & AI (LawAI) is an independent think tank focused on legal and policy analysis for advanced artificial intelligence, with an emphasis on how laws, legal institutions, and policymakers can respond as AI systems become more capable and widely deployed. LawAI describes its work as combining rigorous legal analysis with engagement on technical and institutional details, aiming to produce actionable guidance for governments, industry, academia, other nonprofits, and the public.
Strategically, LawAI organizes its research and policy activity into three teams: US Law and Policy, EU Law, and Legal Frontiers. Across these tracks, it conducts foundational research at the intersection of AI and law, performs consulting/analysis for public institutions and other actors, and builds the field through fellowships and events.
LawAI’s “Legal Frontiers” work highlights conceptual and technical-legal ideas (e.g., law-following AI and related research agendas), while its US and EU efforts focus on practical legal questions relevant to existing and emerging regulatory frameworks, including enforcement and institutional design issues.
Operationally, LawAI reports primary hubs in Washington, DC and Cambridge, UK, and describes its scale-up trajectory via its annual reporting (e.g., staffing and fellowship application growth).
