What Lightcone Infrastructure does
Lightcone Infrastructure is a Berkeley-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that builds “infrastructure” for the rationality and AI-risk reduction ecosystem—especially through operating the LessWrong community and a physical campus venue, Lighthaven, and through building grantmaking/coordination software and platforms.
Operationally, Lightcone’s work centers on maintaining and improving major community “intellectual commons” (LessWrong and the AI Alignment Forum, as part of its portfolio) and on running Lighthaven as an event and convening space in Berkeley. The organization also develops and operates supporting programs and software aimed at making philanthropy and coordination more effective—most visibly through its work on grantmaking infrastructure with the Survival and Flourishing Fund and through its subsequent launch of Lightcone Commons, which is positioned as an end-to-end platform for coordinating ambitious philanthropy.
