What Nuclear Threat Initiative does
The Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan global security organization focused on reducing nuclear, biological, and emerging technology threats that imperil humanity. NTI combines policy analysis and convening with targeted program implementation to help governments and partners reduce catastrophic risks—spanning nuclear security and strategic stability, biosecurity and the governance of AI-enabled life science tools, and practical risk-reduction initiatives that aim to strengthen safeguards and reduce the likelihood of accidental, mistaken, or unauthorized use or escalation.
As of late 2025, NTI transitioned leadership with Christine E. Wormuth taking over as President and CEO (effective November 17, 2025), following Ernest J. Moniz’s tenure as CEO and co-chair. NTI’s public communications and program descriptions emphasize (1) nuclear risk reduction through fail-safe and stability-focused work, (2) biosecurity governance and safeguards around advanced biological capabilities—especially where AI and life sciences converge—and (3) emerging-technology risk mitigation through concrete tools, frameworks, and policy engagement.
Institutionally, NTI is positioned as a long-running convenor and implementer in WMD risk reduction, with programs that explicitly connect policy output to real-world operational steps—such as supporting mechanisms for DNA screening of synthesis orders and publishing policy frameworks for how biological AI tools could be governed to reduce misuse risk.
