What Pivotal Research does
Pivotal Research is a non-profit, non–share-capital company incorporated in England & Wales that runs an in-person research fellowship program in London aimed at reducing global catastrophic risks—especially those related to advanced AI and biotechnology. Its core program is a structured, mentor-led fellowship model intended to grow the pipeline of early-career (and promising mid-career) technical researchers working on topics including technical AI safety, AI governance, and AI×bio/biosecurity. Pivotal also provides research-management support during the fellowship (project scoping, day-to-day management, compute/stipends, and logistics) and supports longer follow-on research via extensions and/or help connecting to seed funding. In addition to the main AI safety / AI governance fellowship, Pivotal launched a dedicated Frontier Biodefense Fellowship focused on building talent and projects around biodefense topics (e.g., PPE, biohardening, detection, and adjacent areas). The organization’s institutional role is primarily field-building via talent development: it creates a time-bounded, outcomes-oriented research environment that converts fellowship projects into publishable outputs and career opportunities for fellows.
