What United States Department of Energy does
The United States Department of Energy (DOE) is a U.S. federal executive department responsible for addressing the nation’s energy, environmental, and nuclear challenges through a combination of transformative science and technology, energy policy and regulation support, and nuclear security missions. DOE’s mission emphasizes U.S. security and prosperity via transformative science and technology solutions, including “transformative science and technology solutions” and building major scientific platforms.
DOE operates at national scale through a broad “DOE complex” that includes DOE headquarters offices, DOE programs, and the DOE National Laboratories and other government research facilities. A key programmatic pillar is the Office of Science, which sponsors basic research and provides access to unique, open-access scientific user facilities.
DOE also includes major national security and nuclear missions through entities such as the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), which is responsible for enhancing national security through the military application of nuclear science.
In recent years, DOE has also increasingly positioned computing and AI for science and energy applications, including initiatives such as the Genesis Mission and related open-model efforts.
