What Databricks does
Databricks is an enterprise data and AI platform built around a lakehouse architecture and a governance-first approach for data, analytics, machine learning, and AI agents. The platform’s core pattern is to unify “agent-ready” data and AI under shared governance so teams can build and operate analytics and production AI systems with consistent permissions, cost controls, and monitoring.
On the data side, Databricks offers lakehouse-style analytics and warehousing capabilities, plus governed access across datasets using Unity Catalog. Databricks’ current strategic position (based on its most recent investor and product communications) is heavily focused on scaling enterprise AI agents with end-to-end governance, including continued investment in Lakebase (serverless Postgres for applications/agents), Genie, and Unity AI Gateway, alongside expanding partner integrations—most prominently its expanded strategic relationship with Microsoft.
