What EvolutionaryScale does
EvolutionaryScale develops biological foundation models and generative protein-design systems built on the Evolutionary Scale Modeling (ESM) approach. Its flagship model, ESM3, is described as a multimodal generative language-model family that can “reason over” protein sequence, structure, and function and generate protein candidates for scientific research and downstream applications. The company also released ESM Cambrian, positioned as a representation-learning model family that is described as a parallel family to ESM3’s generative flagship. EvolutionaryScale makes ESM3 available via its developer/hosted offerings (including an API surfaced through partners) and via open-weights releases for selected models (e.g., ESM3-open via GitHub/Hugging Face references in its policies and site claims).
Strategically, EvolutionaryScale is no longer operating as an independent standalone organization: its website states that it is now part of Biohub, with current ESM models, APIs, and related services available at Biohub’s platforms and governed by Biohub policies. As a result, EvolutionaryScale’s technical roadmap and model availability appear to be continued and operationalized within Biohub’s nonprofit R&D structure (including Biohub “head of science” leadership drawn from EvolutionaryScale).
