OpenRouter

What OpenRouter does

OpenRouter (openrouter.ai) is an AI inference “gateway” that standardizes access to many third-party model providers through one interface while adding routing, fallbacks, and cost/performance controls. The company positions itself as eliminating model/provider lock-in by letting developers choose from a large catalog (hundreds of models) without changing application code when models or providers change.

Product-wise, OpenRouter exposes an OpenAI-compatible API surface (and related tooling) that routes each request to one or more underlying providers. OpenRouter describes its core differentiators as unified API access, intelligent provider/model selection (including fallbacks), and enterprise-grade reliability features such as analytics and governance controls.

A key part of OpenRouter’s strategy is “model-agnostic observability and management”: it collects request-level metadata and uses it to improve routing decisions, compare models, and explain/model usage patterns. The company also emphasizes multi-modality (beyond text) and has expanded into media generation APIs (e.g., image and video) with a normalized interface.

As of August 23, 2026, OpenRouter announced it is joining Stripe (the transaction was announced with customary closing conditions and was expected to close “in the coming weeks”). That move shifts OpenRouter from independent funding to being a Stripe acquisition target/subsidiary-in-waiting, while OpenRouter stated product integration would not require changes for existing users.

What it builds

OpenRouter Unified API

OpenRouter provides a standards-compatible, OpenAI-compatible API surface that routes inference requests across many providers/models behind a single endpoint so applications can switch models without code rewrites.

Provider Routing & Fallbacks

OpenRouter routes each request to the “best available” provider options and falls back when needed, aiming to improve cost, performance, and uptime.

source ↗
Response Caching

OpenRouter supports request-level response caching (via a request header) for identical calls to return cached results without additional provider token billing.

source ↗
Workspaces (enterprise controls)

OpenRouter offers team/workspace-level governance features for isolating projects and applying controls such as spend guardrails, model/provider allowlists, and related protections.

source ↗
Agent SDK (TypeScript)

OpenRouter’s model-agnostic Agent SDK packages a multi-turn agent loop (tool calling, iteration, streaming, and cost tracking) into a single developer workflow that can run on OpenRouter’s model catalog.

Unified Image API

OpenRouter provides a dedicated, unified image generation API interface to access image-capable models from multiple providers.

source ↗
Unified Video Generation API

OpenRouter includes video generation capabilities under its unified routing/billing layer with normalized parameters and job handling as described in its release spotlight.
