What OpenRouter does
OpenRouter (openrouter.ai) is an AI inference “gateway” that standardizes access to many third-party model providers through one interface while adding routing, fallbacks, and cost/performance controls. The company positions itself as eliminating model/provider lock-in by letting developers choose from a large catalog (hundreds of models) without changing application code when models or providers change.
Product-wise, OpenRouter exposes an OpenAI-compatible API surface (and related tooling) that routes each request to one or more underlying providers.
