What OpenRouter does
OpenRouter is an AI inference “gateway” and model marketplace that provides a single, API-first interface to access and route requests across many third-party model providers. Instead of forcing developers to integrate separately with each provider, OpenRouter standardizes request handling and normalizes model/provider differences into a consistent developer experience, while adding routing, reliability, cost management, and observability features intended for production multi-model workloads.
The platform is used by developers building agents and applications that need (a) optionality across models and providers, (b) predictable uptime and fallback behavior, (c) cost/performance optimization, and (d) enterprise-grade controls such as workspace governance, spend enforcement, and data-handling constraints. OpenRouter also positions its public model catalog and leaderboards (e.g., rankings) as market signals for how models perform and how they’re used.
As of August 2026, OpenRouter has announced/confirmed its “joining forces” with Stripe; Stripe has agreed to acquire OpenRouter, moving OpenRouter into Stripe’s organizational structure while OpenRouter indicates it will continue operating with the same product name and roadmap.
