What Recursion does
Recursion is a clinical-stage TechBio company building an industrialized, AI-native drug discovery and development engine. The company’s Recursion OS is positioned as an end-to-end system that integrates biology, chemistry, and clinical development into a unified intelligence workflow, intended to translate proprietary multimodal biological data into drug discovery decisions at scale. Recursion also describes its operating approach as combining “bilingual” teams spanning life science and AI/engineering, supported by purpose-built AI models and its owned/operated experimental and compute infrastructure.
Strategically, Recursion is positioned as a vertically integrated platform company following its completed business combination with Exscientia in November 2024, which Recursion says created a wholly owned subsidiary structure and strengthened the Recursion OS with both biology and chemistry capabilities. In recent quarters, Recursion has emphasized execution across its wholly owned and partner-backed clinical and discovery programs, while also continuing platform upgrades—such as expanded compute via BioHive-2 and the introduction of agentic/LLM-oriented workflow tooling (LOWE) that Recursion says can orchestrate wet-lab and dry-lab components of Recursion OS using natural language.
Business model: Recursion’s revenue is driven by collaborative and milestone-based arrangements with pharmaceutical/biopharma partners, plus its own wholly owned clinical and preclinical pipeline progress. The company has also used public equity financing to fund ongoing pipeline and platform investment.
Target users/customers (commercially): Recursion’s primary “customers” in the near term are partners in pharma/biopharma collaborations that co-develop or option targets/programs, and (in the longer term) patients/health systems via eventual drug development outcomes from Recursion’s partnered and wholly owned programs.
