What Vector Institute does
Vector Institute is an independent, not-for-profit AI research and adoption organization based in Toronto that aims to translate cutting-edge machine learning and deep learning research into practical, trustworthy deployments across Canada’s economy. Its mission explicitly bridges academic discovery and industry adoption, combining research and talent development with programs for AI engineering, workshops, and applied industry collaboration. Vector’s strategy is structured around (1) advancing AI research (including work it describes as AI safety and AI governance related), (2) building AI talent pipelines through scholarships and recognized graduate programs, and (3) accelerating enterprise and startup adoption via hands-on partner programs such as bootcamps and applied projects. Vector operates from the Schwartz Reisman Innovation Campus and is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors drawn from private sector, public sector, academic, and research communities. The organization launched in 2017 with initial multi-year funding commitments and has continued to build an ecosystem linking research faculty, government partners, industry sponsors, and startup and talent programs.
