What Waymo does
Waymo is Alphabet’s autonomous driving technology company, built to commercialize the Waymo Driver—a fully autonomous, in-house technology stack intended for rider-only operations. Waymo runs a consumer ride-hailing service called Waymo One, where users request trips via the Waymo app in designated service areas; it also operates an autonomy system for trucking and logistics through Waymo Via, and it publishes research datasets (Waymo Open Dataset) for external academic use. In parallel with scaling its operational footprint across U.S. metros, Waymo has expanded its commercial feature set (e.g., new vehicle types operated by newer generations of the Waymo Driver, airport service, and service-area expansions) and has continued to raise large rounds of investment to fund expansion into additional cities and business applications over time. Most recently, Waymo announced a $16B investment round at a $126B post-money valuation (post-money basis as stated by Waymo), led by Dragoneer, DST Global, and Sequoia Capital with Alphabet described as a majority investor.
